Unwind, Explore, Connect: A Forest Therapy Walk
Fiber College is a special place, on the shores of Penobscot Bay, traversed by a fresh water stream and surrounded by century old oak trees that go all the way down to the water's edge. We've always believed that the connections we have to the outer world enhance our creativity and make the Touchstone Retreats even more special because of where we are located.
This year, we've invited Jeanne Christie to be with us Thursday evening after classes and dinner. She's a Registered Maine Guide and a Certified Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs. When asked about what students should expect, she wrote:
A Forest Therapy Walk also sometimes called forest immersion or forest bathing is a slow ramble through the forest fully present and experiencing the world with all our senses. For many it is profoundly relaxing; an opportunity to connect deeply with nature. We’ll start with a gentle outward-facing meditation followed by a series of simple invitations to explore the forest through different senses. A walk is an opportunity to just be in the present moment leaving words behind and becoming fully aware of ‘the more than human world.’ A forest bathing walk includes a series of invitations that encourage you to use all your senses while slowly walking on a trail, wandering independently or just sitting. After each invitation there is an opportunity to share.
Please note, this is not a hike. Total distance is typically less than a quarter mile.
What to wear and bring: Dress comfortably for moving slowly through the woods. This is a wander, not a hike. Close toed shoes are recommended. During the walk we sometimes explore the forest off the trail.
What will be provided: A choice of mats or stools to sit on during the walk and also two kinds of bug spray (if needed) and hand sanitizer as well as everything for the tea ceremony.
May the forest be with you!
