Fiber College of Maine Touchstone Workshop: September 9-13, 2026

DANCING COLOR:

Marbling: Pattern, Process, and Purposeful Wandering with Shannon Kerner

Marbling is a practice where history, chemistry, and intuition meet. In this workshop, we will explore the art of marbling as both a time-honored craft and a space for discovery—one that rewards patience, attention, and a willingness to let the process lead.

Participants will explore classic approaches such as stone and combed patterns, while also allowing room for variation, experimentation, and the quiet surprises that emerge when technique meets curiosity. Each print becomes a record of a moment—unrepeatable, responsive, and shaped by both intention and chance.

On the final day, we’ll extend the process by marbling a piece of leather (if you choose), translating what we’ve learned onto a new surface and deepening our understanding of how this ancient practice adapts and evolves.

This workshop offers a balance of skill-building and exploration—an opportunity to gather both practical knowledge and personal touchstones through a process that invites purposeful wandering within a well-held tradition.

Marbled books by Shannon Kerner for Touchstones Retreat workshopWe'll begin with the historical roots of marbling and a clear grounding in materials and preparation: making and handling carrageenan, preparing paints, and properly alumming paper and fabric to receive the print.  From there, we move to the bath itself—learning how color behaves on a viscous surface and how small gestures create lasting patterns.

Class and Retreat fee: $1090

Materials fee: $40/person if you want to focus entirely on marbling paper

$90/person if you'd like to marble paper in addition to a small piece of leather and prepared cotton fabric (18"x 22")
