Fiber College of Maine Touchstone Workshop: Sept 9-13, 2026

KINETIC SCULPTURE

Transform weathered forest and shoreline treasures into mesmerizing kinetic sculptures with Chris Toy.

If you’re the kind of person who is always "making"—whether that’s in your studio, your garden, or just navigating a busy life—you realize that balance isn't about standing still. It’s about how we adjust in response to motion.

In this workshop, we’re going to play with this idea physically by building kinetic sculptures. We’ll skip kits and "perfect" patterns. Instead, we’ll coddiwomple while we forage treasures from Maine’s gardens, beaches, woods and treasure piles—salt, sand, rust and sun-cured wood, organically modeled shells, or some aerodynamic feathers—and fashion them into moving symphonies.Driftwood mobile by Chris Toy

What we’ll do together:

  • Master the "Maker" Hacks: I’ll share the clever shortcuts that make all the difference—like using a power drill to instantly straighten out kinked wire or creating infinitely adjustable balance points so your sculpture can evolve as you build.
  • The Physics of "Not Going Crazy": Balancing a complex mobile can feel like a puzzle. I’ll show you my step-by-step method to balance every single component individually, making final assembly and adjustment a joy rather than frustration.
  • Get Comfortable with the Tools: We’ll use wire cutters and needle-nose pliers to bend and loop wire. You’ll get hands-on with drills and saws to prep your found objects, and use hot glue guns or simple fasteners to pull it all together.
  • Embrace the "Happy Accident": Sculpture is a great way to practice letting go. We’ll lean into the unplanned moments and see where the materials want to go, rather than forcing a specific result.

A Supportive Studio Environment: No prior experience with hand or power tools is required! Whether you are a seasoned builder or picking up a drill for the first time, you will receive personalized guidance. Our studio is a space of safety, curiosity, and possibility.

Class and Retreat Fee: $1090.00

Materials fee: $25

I’ve spent my life teaching people how to do things that might seem a little daunting at first. As a Registered Maine Guide, I’ve helped folks 10-70 navigate a safe round-trip to the summit of Katahdin. I love hearing a student say, "I can't believe how easy Chris made that—I could totally do this at home!"

Touchstone Retreat Schedule
