TRANSFORMING TAPESTRY

Create a three dimensional form using a small flat frame loom.

With Barbara Burns

Expand your horizons in tapestry. Create a three dimensional form from flat weaving using the tapestry technique of pulled warp. The technique works similarly to darts in a dress pattern. In tapestry, areas of warp are left exposed. Once removed from the simple frame loom the warp is pulled to create shape and dimension.

Instructor Barbara Burns will guide students through each step of the process from start to finish. The workshop is suitable for beginners and weavers with experience with tapestry weaving who wish to explore a different facet of the medium. The workshop is structured to provide individual attention within a small group of students.

Class and Retreat Fee: $990.00

Materials fee:

$25 includes warp, weft, handout, use of loom, bobbins and other weaving and design supplies.

Student should bring: small scissors, pen and notepad for note taking, gloves to protect hands when pulling warps, small ruler.

There will be simple designs to choose from and modify to your liking or just play with color in the weaving process, best choice for beginners.

For more experienced weavers: If you think you would like to create a simple design to weave feel free to bring paper and whatever art supplies you like to work with.

After you have registered, if you have questions concerning your weaving contact Barbara

Barbara Burns Bio Picture

My weaving career began in 1992 after studying interior design and textile and costume conservation at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. In 2003 I took my first tapestry workshops. I have studied with several excellent tapestry teachers including Archie Brennan and Susan Martin-Maffei in New York, Pat Taylor at West Dean College in England and Marcel Marois from Canada.

I am known for my three dimensional tapestries of vessels and wearable corsets. The corsets are influenced by historical subjects and how they relate to contemporary issues. The vessels are influenced by Greek amphoras and the ceramic vessels of Grayson Perry. There is a deep well of connotations to be drawn from the corset and I want my viewer to draw from that well.
