Fiber College of Maine Touchstone Workshop: September 3-7, 2025
A CONVERSATION WITH THE EARTH AND THE OCEAN.
Explore eco-printing and the use of natural dyes and inks to create your unique visual language on cloth.
With Sasha Azbel
Come forage for seaweed, our main character, within the stunning intertidal zone of mid-coast Maine. Let’s collect the berries, leaves, branches, flowers, and barks of the forests and gardens surrounding our creative retreat. With these plant collaborators, and each other, we will explore fabric preparation and pattern making techniques to develop our own unique visual language on cloth - a record of a conversation with time and place, the earth and the ocean.
This class takes us into the surrounding landscapes for foraging time and brings us back to the studio to learn about mordanting methods for natural dye applications on fiber. We will eco-printing various species of our foraged seaweeds, and other plants and minerals an intrepid printer may want to explore. Then we will spend time experimenting with tie resist and block resist methods, with dye baths from our collected and processed plants. We will learn how to make our own inks to further add depth and style to our pieces, creating layered and narrative-rich panels that can be transformed into apparel or a decoration for the home.
Class and Retreat Fee: $990.00
Materials fee: $100 (to be paid at the start of class)
Students should bring an apron, a notepad and their favorite pen...Sasha will bring the rest.
Aleksandra (Sasha) Azbel, is the founder and creative director of Sashoonya. Her experience as an immigrant, from Kazakhstan, and encounters with textile artisans around the world, have pushed her to explore questions of belonging, and how our natural environment is a part of our cultural identity.
Although, she is passionate about textiles and natural dyes, her background is actually in architecture. She studied architecture at Texas A&M, and at the Rhode Island School of Design, and continues her connection to the field by teaching part time in an architecture college. In 2019 she received a Fulbright scholarship to explore natural dyes in Sri Lanka and used this opportunity to make a career change and explore her passion for natural dyes and textile craft.
