Wood-Fired Oven Workshop

We're so excited to offer this opportunity!

v4 bread oven workshop

Ever wanted to bake bread in your own wood fired bread oven?  Join master baker Michael Baker for a 4 Day intensive. Learn to build an oven of your own and learn why baking breads in a wood-fired oven involves thinking about temperature and ingredients in a different way. All participants should possess minimal baking skills in a household oven. Michael has over 20 years of experience building ovens and baking in both urban and extremely remote settings across multiple continents.  Michael is a renowned historian of grains and baking lore.  It's a remarkable treat to have him with us in Searsport for a workshop. He's in our world for 10 days because of his generous offer to bake for the Armenian Picnic.

Day 1 (late afternoon): Meet at Searsport Shores Ocean Campground and bake bread with Michael in the wood fired oven he built 4 years ago.  The conversation will include why bread cooks differently in a wood fired oven and how to get the best results.  Types of wheat and other grains from around the world to make your breads interesting, healthy and delicious.  Bring a bottle of wine to enjoy with the fresh baked bread and dipping oils while you get to know the other workshop participants.

Days 2 & 3: Make a community bread oven at the Mermaid Plaza in downtown Searsport.  You'll be doing the building...start at the very foundation and follow all of the steps to create a perfect, vaulted oven.

Day 4 (morning): Join Michael again at the Searsport Shores oven and bake morning treats.  Conversation will be focused on questions and answers about all things wood oven related...bring a notebook and pencil to capture recipes, tips and tricks before you head off to build your own oven at home.

The cost for the 4 day workshop is $125/person.  Lunches will offered a la carte on days two and three (we'll organize a run to the group's choice of restaurant).
